Question

Given the following reactions with their enthalpy changes, at 25C,
N2(g)+2O2(g)2NO2(g);H=16.18 kcal
N2(g)+2O2(g)N2O4(g);H=2.31 kcal
Calculate the enthalpy of dimerisation of NO2. Is N2O4 apt to be stable with respect to NO2 at 25C?
(13.87 kcal,N2O4 stable only at low temp.)

Solution

N2(g)+2O2(g)2NO2(g);ΔH=16.18kcal
2NO2(g)N2(g)+2O2(g);ΔH=16.18kcal(1)
N2(g)+2O2(g)N2O4(g);ΔH=2.31kcal(2)
Adding (1) and (2), 2NO2N2O4(g);ΔH=(16.18+2.31)kcal=13.87kcal
Therefore, the enthalpy of dimerisation of NO2 is 13.87kcal.
Therefore, N2O4 is stable at low temperatures.
