You might have recognized the Haworth projection of glucose from the video and you must be familiar with the Anomeric carbon. If you aren't, I recommend you go back to the video and refresh again.

If you know the anomeric carbon, which is the one to the right of the oxygen atom in the ring, then you tell if the glucose is alpha or beta depending on the position of the -OH group.

If the if the -OH is opposite, it is called beta-glucopyranose

And if the -OH is on the same side as that of -CH2OH, it is called alpha-glucopyranose.
