Solution

Answer (a):

  • Cities have massive housing colonies, housing societies, and apartment buildings.
  • All these high-rise buildings and housing societies have groundwater pumping devices.
  • These have led to massive depletion of groundwater resources and do not allow the groundwater to replenish itself.
  • Even the other water bodies like lakes, rivers, and ponds are massively polluted due to wastes from cities and industries.
  • All these show that water resources are not utilized judiciously.

Answer (b):

  • Rivers' aquatic life has been affected as the natural flow of water is affected creating poor sediment flow, rockier stream beds, and deposition of huge quantities of sediments at the bottom of the reservoir.
  • In flood plains, the soil and existing vegetation are submerged due to dams.
  • Aquatic life finds it difficult to migrate.

Answer (c):

  • Multipurpose river projects have led to the displacement of local communities which led to the rise of social movements like Tehri Dam Andolan, and Narmada Bachao Andolan.
  • In Gujarat, during droughts, there were agitations by the Sabarmati-basin farmers as more priority was given to supplying water to urban areas.
  • Few urban centers, industrialists, and landowners have benefitted from multipurpose river projects whereas local people have not received many benefits from multi-purpose river projects.

Answer (d):

  • Due to the perennial Rajasthan Canal, rooftop rainwater harvesting is in decline.
  • In Rajasthan, to store drinking water, ‘Rooftop rainwater harvesting’ was commonly practiced.
  • Rain-fed storage structures were created in agricultural fields. It allowed water to stand thereby moistening the soil – Johads in different parts of Rajasthan, and Khadins in Jaisalmer.
  • For storing drinking water, all the houses had tankas or underground tanks in the Balmer, Phalodi, and Bikaner regions of Rajasthan.
  • The size of tankas would be as large as a big room.
  • The Rooftop rainwater harvesting system had tankas that were built inside the courtyard or main house.
  • Through a pipe they were connected to the sloping roofs of the house.
  • These underground tankas are used to store rainwater, which falls on the roof and flows down through pipes.
