In a eukaryotic cell, the DNA is wound around an octamer of histone core to form bead-like structures called nucleosomes. The octamer core of histone proteins is made up of two units each of H2A, H2B, H3 and H4. Another histone protein, H1, is present at the point of entry and exit of DNA from nucleosome. The histone proteins are rich in basic amino acids lysine and arginine which gives a positive charge to them. The positive charge of histone proteins helps in the winding of negatively charged DNA around them.
