Question

How Are Alleles Inherited From Parents?

Open in App
Solution

Alleles:

  1. An allele is an alternative form of a gene located on a specific part of a chromosome.
  2. Chromosomal DNA contains a specific gene that encodes a specific sequence made of A(Adenine), G(Guanine), C(Cytosine), and T(Thymine).
  3. Every organism has two alleles for each trait (for example, for example in the sweet pea plant, tall(denoted by the T gene) and a dwarf plant (denoted by the t gene) have two alleles for a single trait,i.e., height.
  4. In somatic cells, contains two alleles for every gene given by each parent.

Inheritance of alleles:

  1. One allele for each gene is inherited from a parent to offspring.
  2. When both parents provide the same alleles, they are called homozygous, but if the alleles are different from each parent, they are called heterozygous.
  3. A factor that depends on inheritance is its dominance or recessive character, if a character is present in a highly expressive form or dominant form, then the other it will be expressed than the recessive or less expressive.
