Question

How are bonding molecular orbitals and antibonding molecular orbitals formed?

Open in App
Solution

Hi,

Bonding Molecular orbital : The molecular orbitals formed by the additive effect of atomic orbitals is called bonding molecular orbital.

Antibonding molecular orbital : The molecular orbitals formed by the subtractive effect of atomic orbitals is called bonding molecular orbital.

Diference between Bonding Molecular orbital and Antibonding molecular orbital :
Bonding Molecilar orbital(BMO)

Anti bonding Molecular orbital(ABMO)

1. BMO has less energy and more stable compared to the parent atomic orbital.

ABMO has more energy and more stable

compared to the parent atomic orbital.

2. In BMO the possibility of finding electrons are maximum. In ABMO the possibility of finding

electrons are minimum.
