India is the largest democracy in the world. Hence in India, citizens elect the government to run the country, and the elected government works for the people's benefit.
Elections serve as a mechanism that allows people to elect and replace their representatives regularly.
In India, the citizens have the power to make key decisions of electing representatives directly or indirectly.

  • Direct elections are when the citizens themselves vote for their representatives.
  • Indirect elections are when the elected representatives of citizens elect other members of the government.
  • Elections to the Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies, and local bodies are examples of direct elections.
