How can a small cockroach hold its breath for 40 minutes even if he has small lungs ?

Cockroach do not posses lungs, they breathe through spiracles. In cockroaches air is taken in by the spiracles while the trachea transport it to the other parts of the body. Insects have spiracles on their body surface which are guarded by muscles for their opening and closing and controlled by central nervous system but also react to external stimuli.
