Solution

Bones:

  1. Bones are specialised connective tissue.
  2. They have a hard and non-pliable matrix rich in calcium salts and collagen fibres.
  3. They are born by transformation from cartilage.
  4. When the foetus develops in a mother’s womb, the skeletal system gets organised into a cartilage framework.
  5. Before birth, a certain amount of hardening of the limb bones takes place which allows the infant to stand shortly after delivery.
  6. However, the more significant part of the skeleton is cartilage at the time of birth.
  7. After birth, all parts of the skeleton begin to harden.
  8. This process continues until old age when very little cartilage is left and the bones are brittle.
  9. The process of hardening cartilage into bone is referred to as ossification.
