Question

How can we tell if a given substance is amorphous or crystalline

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student
Compounds can be classified as crystalline or amorphous on the basis of the order of arrangement of their particles.

Crystalline compounds have definite characteristic geometrical shape. The arrangement of their particles (atoms, molecules or ions) is ordered with regular pattern of arrangement of particles (long range order). E.g. NaCl, quartz etc.

Amorphous compounds consist of particles of irregular shape. The arrangement of their particles (atoms, molecules or ions) is disordered with irregular pattern of arrangement of particles (short range order). E.g. quartz glass, rubber, plastics etc.
