Dear Student
The Bhakti movement started around the 6th and 7th century around the Tamil region and later spread to the other parts of India. As the name suggest it promoted sefless, single minded devotion to God. The Bhakti movement challenged many prevailing rituals and practices like caste and class distinctions. Many significant chieftans of the Tamil region like the Pallavas, Pandyas and Cholas supporrted the Bhakti movement. They provided the Bhakti saints conducive environment for the promotion and preaching of Bhakti tradition. The rulers also built various temples and gave land grants to the Bhakti Saints. The Saivaite Nayanmars and Vashnavaite Alwars freely preached the ideaolgy of Bhakti Saints.
