Dear Student,
a. In Europe a sense of national identity was forged to create nation state, to attain freedom from the clutches of monarchal regimes, establishing nation states, to popularise liberal ideas. to recognise ideas of liberty, equality , fraternity for its citizens.
b. Nationalism in Europe aimed to establish democratic republics based on constitutionalism, on rule of law , it aimed to set up democratic constitutions.
c. It resulted in the evolution of the idea of nation state that brought about far recahing changes and transformed the entire political map of Europe.
d. By the 19th century ,The French Revolutionary ideas inspired the oppressed people in other parts of Europe with liberal ideas.
e. French revolutionaries stated it was their mission to liberate people in all parts of Europe from despotism and to spread ideas of liberty, equality justice, fraternity
f. This was the time when the idea of nation state did not exist. Germany, Italy and Switzerland for instance were divided into kingdoms, duchies and cantons whose rulers had their autonomous territories and these regions were under despotic regimes. People spoke different languages, there was no concept of nation state.
g. However, being inspired from the french revolution, different revolutions marked the birth of independent nation states in Europe.
h. The change can also be attributed to the spread of liberal ideology that challenged the clerical privileges, aristocracy and stood for constitution and representative government.
i. Also, The role of the secret societies as formed in Italy, Germany, Switzerland.
j. Further, the sense of nationalism was also instilled through culture, poetry, art, allegories,music etc.
k. The role of the middle Class who demanded constitutionalism, nation state etc also these brought sweeping changes in Europe.
