Open in App
Solution

Instructions: This explanation to this question can be broken down in five parts:
  1. Write about Portuguese arrival in India

  2. Write about their trade expansion

  3. Write about their trade in Bengal.

  4. Write about their bad behavior .

  5. Write about the complaint by the subedar of Bengal and the action taken by Shah Jahan.

Solution: The Portuguese were the first European power to arrive in our country. Vasco da Gama, the great Portuguese sailor, arrived at Calicut on the 22nd of May 1498. The then King of Calicut, Zamorin, finally granted permission to the Portuguese to trade in India. The Portuguese started expanding their trade and established various trading centres in the next hundred years. But their regime started declining as they expanded their trade to Bengal. The Subedar of Bengal complained to Shah Jahan about the unfair activities of the Portuguese. On the order of Shah Jahan, the Hugli port was demolished, and all the Portuguese ships were burnt and destroyed, ending the Portuguese regime in India.
