Question

How do fungi mate?

Open in App
Solution

Reproduction in fungi:

  1. Fungi are eukaryotic organisms (well-defined cell membrane and nucleoid).
  2. Reproduction in fungi occurs sexually via the mating of two hyphae (filamentous branched fungi).
  3. The two compatible hyphae interact to fuse.
  4. The first stage is the process of plasmogamy where the protoplast of two of the parent cells without the fusion of the nucleus.
  5. Successively the nucleus of the fused protoplast cells also fuses which results in a process known as karyogamy.
  6. This results in a diploid zygote.
  7. The zygote matures to produce haploid (n DNA) spores via the process of meiosis (reductional division).
