Question

How do spermatids become sperms?

Open in App
Solution

Spermatids become sperms by the process of spermiogenesis.

Spermiogenesis:

  1. The process of spermiogenesis is then carried out by the four spermatids.
  2. At this point, a spherical cell transforms into the recognizable elongated sperm structure.
  3. Microtubules develop into a tail at one end and an axoneme at the other called the anterior end. Numerous mitochondria that supply the sperm with energy surround the axoneme.
  4. The chromatin is firmly packed, and the Golgi body surrounds the nucleus in the form of an acrosome cap.
  5. Enzymes required for piercing the ovum's defenses are present in the acrosome.
  6. Under the effect of testosterone, sperm maturation is finished, and extra cytoplasm and other substances are eliminated.
  7. The cell body, which is mainly the nucleus and acrosome, and the tail make up a mature sperm.
