Question

How do white blood cells recognize pathogens?

Open in App
Solution

Pathogen recognition of white blood cells:

  1. An organism that infects its host with the disease is referred to as a pathogen, and the severity of the disease symptoms is referred to as virulence.
  2. Pathogens include viruses, bacteria, unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes, as well as other taxonomically diverse organisms.
  3. When a pathogen enters the human body and infects a cell, the cell displays an antigen (a specific protein) on its surface.
  4. White blood cells called lymphocytes identify the antigen marker of the pathogen and activate the helper T cell.
  5. It triggers the B cells(types of lymphocytes) to begin to make proteins called antibodies.
  6. These antibodies recognize and destroy the pathogens such as viruses, fungi, bacteria, etc.
