Question

How do you activate B cells?

Open in App
Solution

B cell activation:

  1. B cells or B lymphocytes become activated when they come in contact with an antigen protein of a pathogen.
  2. In most cases, an activated helper T cell stimulates the activation of the B cell.
  3. Once an antigen triggers the activation of a T cell, it is able to activate a B cell that already recognizes the same antigen.
  4. The activation is followed by a cell-cell interaction between the CD40 protein-ligand on the T cell surface and CD40 protein on the B cell surface.
  5. Secretion of cytokinins by the helper T cell also stimulates the activation of the B cell.
