How do you determine if a bond is ionic or covalent?

Open in App
Solution

Determination of covalent Ionic bond- Ionic bond:

Ionic bond- Ionic bond is in between a metal and a non-metal. The formation of ionic bond takes place when complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another atom.

Examples- Sodium chloride(NaCl) and Potassium Hydroxide (KOH).

Covalent bond- Covalent bond is between two non-metals. The formation of covalent bond takes place when sharing of electron between two or more atoms happens.

Examples- Methane(CH4) and Ammonia(NH3)

Below diagram shows the formation of Ionic bond and covalent bond as:

By looking periodic table we can determine whether the compound is made up of metal/non-metal or just of 2 nonmetals.
