Question

How Do You Fill Orbitals?

Open in App
Solution

Filling of orbitals-

The filling of electrons into orbitals of different atoms takes place according to the Aufbau principle which is based on Pauli's exclusion principle, Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity, and creative energies of orbitals.

1-Aufbau principal-

-The building up of electrons means filling up of orbitals with electron

- Electrons first occupy the lowest energy orbitals available to them and entire to higher energy orbitals.

-H- atom where the energy of orbitals depends only on n, the energy of orbital of multi-electron depend both on n and i

-According to this rule, the lower the value of (n+1)for an orbital lower is its energy.

2-Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity-

  • It deals with the filling of electrons into orbitals belonging to the same subshell
  • The pairing of electrons in orbital belonging to the same subshell does not take place until each orbital belonging to that subshell has got one electron each.
