How does a clinical thermometer measure the fever of a patient?

Body temperature of normal person is 98.6 °F. Clinical thermometer is touched to patient's skin for about a minute and then removed. If the reading on the thermometer is more than 98.6°F, it implies that the patient is suffering from fever.
