Question

How does anisole react with HNO3 in presence of Suphuric acid?

Open in App
Solution

Anisole (methoxybenzene) is an electron-rich arene that will react with nitric acid in the presence of sulphuric acid in an electrophilic aromatic substitution.

When anisole is nitrated with a mixture of conc. HNO3 and H2SO4 it gives a mixture of ortho-Nitroanisole and para-Nitro anisole (major) products.
