How does cell division play a role in hair growth?

Open in App
Solution

Cell division:

  1. Cell division is the process by which a parent cell divides into two daughter cells.
  2. In an animal's life cycle, different stages of cell division include meiosis and mitosis, in which the mother cell divides into genetically identical two daughter cells.

Cell division in hair growth:

  1. Cell division is important in hair growth, and the roots of hair have cells that divide quickly to push out new clubbed hair.
  2. A new hair grows to replace the hair that is no longer growing or has reached the anagen phase.
  3. It takes 28 days for a hair follicle to grow 1cm.
  4. The stem cells at the tip of the hair follicle are follicles that exist beneath the hair skin and continue to produce throughout a person's lifetime.
  5. They are normally inactive, but when new growth occurs during the hair cycle, they quickly activate.
  6. During the hair growth cycle, cells divide into three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
  7. Anagen is the first stage of hair growth, which lasts between 3 and 10 years.
  8. Rapid cell division occurs in the hair bulb and dermal papilla during the anagen phase.
