Question

How does digestion take place in amoeba?

Open in App
Solution

Digestion in Amoeba:

  1. It is a unicellular protozoan found majorly at the bottom of water bodies.
  2. Phagocytosis occurs in Amoeba.
  3. It is the process by which the food particle is engulfed as a whole.
  4. A food vacuole is formed around the ingested food molecule and is then pushed deeper into the cell via cytoplasmic movements.
  5. The food vacuole containing the food molecule fuses with lysosome which contains amylase and proteinase enzymes.
  6. These enzymes help digest sugars and proteins.
  7. As digestion occurs, the vacuole becomes smaller and becomes indefinite.
