How does DNA fit into a cell?

Open in App
Solution

DNA inside the cell:

  1. DNA is the genetic or the hereditary material present inside the nucleus of a cell.
  2. A typical higher eukaryotic cell contains 2m of DNA packed into a nucleus 10 micrometres in diameter.
  3. DNA packaging in eukaryotes is very organized.
  4. It gets wrapped around basic histone proteins to form nucleosomes.
  5. These nucleosomes are further organized in the form of higher-order chromatin fibres.
  6. These chromatin fibres then condense to form chromosomes that fit inside the nucleus.
