Gene frequency:

  1. Gene frequency is also referred to as allelic frequency because gene and allele are used synonymously.
  2. It refers to how alleles are recurrent in a particular population.
  3. It is generally expressed as a percentage or fraction.

Change in gene frequency:

  1. In a specific population, gene frequency ought to remain in constant and stabilized form from generation to generation unless any force of evolution acts on it.
  2. Gene frequency of any population changes due to four main reasons:

(a) Gene flow: It means the transfer of genetic material from one population to another.

(b) Genetic drift: It is the process of change in the existing gene frequency because of some random change in the environment.

(c) Migration: When people from a population migrate from one place to another, it leads to a change in the frequency of genes.

(d) Natural selection: It allows a particular gene or alleles to rise more as a result of selection by nature.
