Mesosomes are extension of plasma membrane in prokaryotes in the form of vesicle and lamellae. Mesosomes also regulate the activity of autolytic enzymes that are necessary for wall formation. Mucopeptides of bacterial cell wall is digested by autolytic enzymes in mesosomes. The autolytic enzymes takes action and digest the cell wall of bacteria at very specific point, from that area bacteria start dividing. This suggest that autolytic enzymes play role in bacterial division and growth. This has led to suggestions that the autolysins are involved in bacterial growth. Mesosomes have a specific site of attachment for DNA during replication and contain enzymes required during replication.
