How does mucilage layer protect slime moulds?

Mucilage layer performs protective role for slime moulds like-

  • Spores are present in mucilageous layer and it dries and hardens the spores and prevents its dispersion by wind. The spores belonging to zygomycota gets dispersed as a unit through the slime layer.

  • It acts as a barrier and protect the slimes from drying and maintain water balance.
