Question

How does renin increase blood pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Renin:

  1. Renin is an enzyme that supports proper sodium and potassium levels in the body as well as blood pressure regulation.
  2. In response to decreased glomerular blood flow, juxtaglomerular cells release renin.
  3. It converts angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, which is then converted to angiotensin II.
  4. Angiotensin II is a vasodilator that raises blood pressure.
  5. Angiotensin II stimulates the adrenal cortex's secretion of aldosterone.
  6. Aldosterone increases blood pressure by causing water and sodium ion reabsorption from the renal tubules.
