Question

How does soap work in chemistry?

Open in App
Solution

Soap: In saponification, soap is produced by hydrolysis of fats. Soap contains two parts a hydrocarbon chain as the tail and a ionic group as the head.

Work of soap:

  • Oil and water are two immiscible liquids which means they never mix with each other. The work of soap is to break the oil particle in such a manner it will be dissolved in water.
  • This happens because soap has two different ends one hydrophilic and another hydrophobic. Hydrophilic is the end which remains in the water while hydrophobic will be in oil during the action of soap.

Thus, In chemistry, the soap works through the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts.
