Amoeba is a microscopic, single-celled organism with no definite shape.
It moves by extending its plasma membrane and divides by binary fission.
This unicellular organism follows a heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
Process of food intake by Amoeba
In the first step, Amoeba detects the presence of a food particle and extends the plasma membrane. These extensions of the plasma membrane are called pseudopodia.
In the second step, pseudopodia slowly start encircling the food particle.
In the third step, the pseudopodia fuse and form a vacuole containing the food particle.
Enzymes are released into the vacuole to disintegrate and digest the food in the final step.
