How does the digestive system maintain homeostasis?

Open in App
Solution

Homeostasis:

  1. The tendency to maintain internal body temperature is referred to as homeostasis.
  2. Homeostasis is the state of equilibrium that the body maintains in order to function properly. Homeostasis is maintained by all body systems, including the digestive system.
  3. The digestive system maintains homeostasis by ensuring that the stomach environment has the right pH balance.
  4. The body uses both positive and negative mechanisms to maintain homeostasis.
  5. When the body detects an imbalance, the various systems work together to counterbalance and restore correct equilibrium. When the body detects a difference and attempts to improve it, this is known as positive feedback.
  6. The digestive tract feeds beneficial bacteria that suppress disease and generate biological compounds the body need, such as vitamin K, by maintaining the proper enzyme ratio.
