Question

How does the kink near the bulb in a clinical thermometer help in measuring body temperature accurately?

Open in App
Solution

When the thermometer bulb is placed under the tongue or in the armpit to check the body temperature, the mercury expands until it reaches the temperature of the body.

Kink prevents the rapid falling of the mercury back into the bulb of the thermometer after it is removed from the mouth . Hence one can measure the temperature of the body accurately and conveniently even if the thermometer is taken out from the body.
