Solution

Variation of metallic character in a group

  1. Metallic character of an atom refers to the ability of an atom to lose an electron easily.
  2. As we move down a group the number of shells increases.
  3. With the increase in the number of shells, the electrons in the outer most shell become farther away from the nucleus, that is the nuclear size increases.
  4. As the distance between the nucleus and the outer most shell increases the valence electrons feel less attractive forces from the nucleus.
  5. Thus, the electrons in the outer most shell can easily be lost.
  6. Therefore, the metallic character increases down the group.
