The central government and state governments have their own list of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and backward and most backward classes.
Students applying to educational institutions or those applying for government jobs have to furnish proof of their caste or tribe status.
If a particular caste or tribe is on the government’s list, then candidates from those castes or tribes can avail the benefits of reservation.
Cut-offs
For admission to colleges or job posts, governments define a set of cut-off marks.
This means that not all candidates with a valid caste or tribe certificate can qualify for admission or jobs.
Only those candidates, who perform reasonably well and score above the cut-off point secure admission or jobs.
