Question

How does vasopressin affect blood pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Vasopressin:

  1. It is an antidiuretic hormone synthesized in the hypothalamus that regulates blood pressure.
  2. Vasopressin helps regulate blood pressure by coordinating with kidneys and blood vessels.
  3. Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is also called Vasopressin.
  4. It is a naturally occurring hormone that helps in controlling various physical processes & several life-threatening conditions, including bleeding abnormalities and septic shocks.
  5. The low level of Antidiuretic hormone in blood cells results in: Diabetes insipidus, primary polydipsia, and damage to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland.
  6. A lot of water is excreted by the kidneys, which then increases urine volume and lowers blood pressure.
  7. High amounts of this hormone cause the blood vessels to narrow and increase blood pressure.
  8. Aldosterone is present mainly in the renal tubules and stimulates the reabsorption of Na+ and water and the excretion of K+ and phosphate ions.
  9. Thus, aldosterone helps in the maintenance of electrolytes, body fluid volume, osmotic pressure, and blood pressure.
