Question

How does the elasticity of blood vessels affect blood pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Blood pressure:

  1. The effort exerted by the heart to pump blood throughout the body is measured by blood pressure. It's also the force that blood cells exert on artery walls throughout the circulation process.
  2. The ability of vessel walls to revert to their original shape after being squeezed and stretched is known as elasticity.
  3. Elastic vessels are those that have a diameter more than 10 mm. Its many elastic threads allow it to expand when blood pumped from the ventricles passes through it, then recoils once the surge has passed.
  4. Because the walls of the arteries are hard and incapable of drawing back and stretching, blood flow resistance increases dramatically, and blood pressure rises to dangerously high levels.
  5. As a result, the heart would have to work harder to increase the volume of blood released by each pump while maintaining adequate flow and pressure. As a result of the increasing pressure, the walls of the arteries would have to thicken even more.
