Question

How does vasopressin affect kidneys?

Open in App
Solution

Vasopressin:

  1. It is an antidiuretic hormone synthesized in the hypothalamus that regulates blood pressure and maintains osmolality.
  2. It increases the water permeability of the collecting tubules in nephrons and boosts water reabsorption.
  3. This results in the formation of urine that is highly concentrated.
  4. Aldosterone is present mainly in renal tubules and stimulates the reabsorption of Na+ and water molecules and the excretion of K+ and phosphate ions.
  5. Thus, aldosterone helps in the maintenance of electrolytes, body fluid volume, osmotic pressure, and blood pressure.
