Question

How frost formed on car's windshield is an example of sublimation of gas to solid ? Is it condensation also give an other example of sublimation ( gas to solid )

Solution

frost formed on car's windshield is a transition from liquid to solid is an example of freezing because frost on the outside of a windshield can be caused by rain or snow freezing on the car.

Sublimation(solid to gas conversion)

Sublimation is a specialized change of state when a solid substance skips the liquid phase and moves directly into the gas phase. This occurs because the substance absorbs energy so quickly from the surroundings that melting never occurs.

Examples of Sublimation:

1. "Dry ice" or solid carbon dioxide sublimes.

2. Snow and ice can sublime in the winter months without melting.

3. Moth balls sublime

4. Frozen foods will sublime and you will find ice crystals inside of the box or bag.

gas to solid conversion is known as deposition

Examples of Gas to Solid(deposition):

1. Making dry ice or solid carbon dioxide involves the removal of gaseous carbon dioxide from air and using cold temperatures and higher pressure causes the gas particles to skip the liquid phase and deposit into a solid to form a chunk of dry ice.

2. A carbon dioxide fire extinguisher has been filled with gaseous carbon dioxide but inside the canister the higher pressure causes this to turn into solid carbon dioxide which later is released as a white powder when putting out a fire.

3. In severely cold temperatures frost will form on windows because the water vapor in the air comes into contact with a window and immediately forms ice without ever forming liquid water.

Condensation is the change of the physical state of matter from gas phase into liquid phase.

Common examples of condensation are: dew forming on grass in the early morning, eye glasses fogging up when you enter a warm building on a cold winter day, or water drops forming on a glass holding a cold drink on a hot summer day.
