Acetylene is prepared in the laboratory by the action of water on calcium carbide. CaC2+2H2O→Ca(OH)2+C2H2↑ Method: Set up the apparatus as given below. Take a few pieces of calcium carbide in a conical flask. Add a few drops of water through the dropping funnel. Acetylene gas is produced which is collected over water yb the downward displacement of water.
Acetylene obtained from calcium carbide contains impurities of phosphine, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, arsine etc. By passing the gas produced through water, all impurities except phosphine and arsine are absorbed. Phosphine and arsine are removed by passing the gas through acidified K2Cr2O7 or CuSO4 solution. The pure gas so obtained is collected by downward displacement of water as Acetylene is almost insoluble in water.
