Apomixis is the formation of seeds without fertilization.
Apomixis is asexual reproduction which mimics sexual reproduction where the female ovule of the flower directly develops in to an embryo skipping meiosis and syngamy.
Apomixis is a clonal progeny with that of maternal genotype.
Commercial uses:
It produces seed progeny that is the same as the mother plant.
It is commercially used to produce seeds in hybrid plants, so they need not be produced yearly. Thus it helps in the preservation of good characters over generation and segregation of characters does not occur in the progeny
It also prevents the loss of specific characters from a hybrid.
