Question

How is carbon dioxide gas collected during laboratory experiments?

Open in App
Solution

Understanding the concept

  • When an acid combines with carbonates and hydrogen carbonates, carbon dioxide is generated.
  • In the laboratory, this results in the formation of carbon dioxide.
  • Calcium Hydrogen Carbonates or carbonates and hydrochloric acid are used widely.
  • Because both carbonates and hydrochloric acid (HCl) are inexpensive and readily available.
  • CaCO3(s)+2HCl(l)CaCl2(s)+H2O(g)+CO2(g)

Understanding the diagram :

As indicated in the diagram below, carbon dioxide can be collected over water.

  • It can be stored in a dry, Clean, upright gas jar.
  • Carbon dioxide(CO2) is slightly water-soluble and heavier than air.
  • The less dense air is forced out of the gas jar's top.
  • Carbon dioxide escapes the delivery tube & enters the gas jar.
