  1. Iodine is not synthesized by the body and needs to be supplemented through food and water.
  2. It is very essential for the production of the thyroid hormone called thyroxine.
  3. Goiter or enlargement of the thyroid gland is caused due to the deficiency of iodine.
  4. Iodine deficiency can lead to low production of thyroxine resulting in myxedema in adults and cretinism in children.
