Solution

Pottasium permanganate (K2MnO4) is prepared from pyrdusite ore (MnO2). The finely powdered pyrolusite ore (MnO2) is fused with an alkali metal hydroxide like KOH in the presence of air an oxidizing agent like KNO3 to give that dark green pottasium manganate (K2MnO4). Pottasium manganate dispropartionate in a neutral / acidic medium to give KMnO4.
