Question

how is oxygen and hydrogen separated from water during photosynthesis? It can not be separated by sunlight as it needs an electrochemical process?

Solution

Oxygen and hydrogen ions are liberated when water is acted upon by the light energy in a process called as photolysis of water during light reaction. The photolysis of water involves breaking of water molecule to form oxygen gas and hydrogen ions and electrons.the released electrons and hydrogen ions are captured by other substrate in the vicinity. For e.g in photosynthesis, they are captured by NADP to form NADPH.
