Question

How many Carbons does Acetyl CoA have?

Open in App
Solution

Acetyl-CoA:

  1. Each Acetyl CoA consists of 2 carbon atoms.
  2. During glycolysis, two molecules of pyruvic acid, a 3-carbon atom molecule, formed and undergo oxidative decarboxylation in presence of coenzyme A to produce the Acetyl CoA complex.
  3. This further enters the Krebs cycle, and the acetyl group is released as two carbon dioxide molecules by oxidative decarboxylation.
