  1. Classification of organisms, based on various characteristics into different taxa is called taxonomy.
  2. Basic processes of taxonomy include characterization, identification, classification, and nomenclature.
  3. Classification of organisms involves various ranks or categories.
  4. All of these categories when put together are called taxonomic hierarchy.
  5. Various taxonomic categories are:
    1. Kingdom - Highest category of classification. Organisms belonging to various phyla or divisions are kept into kingdoms.
    2. Phylum or division - Animals belonging to various classes are put under phylum and plants under division.
    3. Class - Organisms that belong to different related orders are put under class.
    4. Order - Organisms belonging to different related families are kept under the same order.
    5. Family - It includes a group of related genera.
    6. Genus - Group of related species is kept under the same genus.
    7. Species - Group of organisms that have some fundamental species are put together under species.

Example - For Humans - Homo sapiens

Kingdom - Animalia

Phylum - Chordata

Class - Mammalia

Order - Primata

Family - Hominidae

Genus - Homo

Species - Sapiens
