Question

How many cytochrome complexes are in the electron transport chain?

Open in App
Solution

Electron Transport Chain:

  1. It occurs in both photosynthesis and cellular respiration processes.
  2. It takes place in mitochondria.

Steps involved in ETS:

  1. Proton gradient is generated across the mitochondrial membrane.
  2. In the mitochondrial intermembrane space accumulation of proton takes place.
  3. Formation of water and reduction of oxygen here, oxygen acts as terminal electron acceptor.
  4. Synthesis of ATP takes place by the process of chemiosmosis.
  5. Synthesis of ATP is catalyzed by enzyme ATP synthase.

Cytochrome complexes involved in ETC are:

The electron transport chain consists of two cytochrome complexes-

  1. Cytochrome bc complex - cytochrome b, c, c1
  2. Cytochrome a-a3 complex - cytochrome a, a3.
