Question

how many electrons in an atom can have n=4 and ml=+1/2

Open in App
Solution

Dear student

Total number of electrons = 2n²; n=4
=2(4)²
= 32

But, ml= +1/2 means electrons are in positive half spin.
since out of the total number of electrons, half number of electrons have +1/2 spin and other half have -1/2 spin
⇒so here the Total No. of electrons having +1/2 spin= 32 - 16
= 16.
