Question

How many isomers are possible for the complex,
Pt(NH3)2(SCN)2?

Open in App
Solution

SCN is an ambidentate ligand and can bind in 2 ways:
Pt(NH3)2(SCN)2 - cis and trans isomer
Pt(NH3)2(NCS)2 - cis and trans isomer
Pt(NH3)2(NCS)(SCN) - cis and trans isomer
The complex is square planar so it does not have a pair of enatiomers because of the presence of a plane of symmetry.
