The mixture has 40% alcohol and 60% water in it, which means 4.8L of alcohol and 7.2L of water.

To make a mixture with 50% alcohol and 50% water each, we will have 6L of alcohol and 6L of water.

So the amount of water is reduced by 1.2L.

To reduce 1.2L of water from the initial mixture, we need to reduce 1.20.6 L = 2L of mixture
